Which ebook formats do you convert to?

We convert to: PDF, HTML, ePub, MS Reader LIT, Mobipocket PRC, Mobipocket PRC with DRM (Kindle), eReader PDB, MSWord, and even a readable RTF (text) file.

 

What files to I need to send for the conversion?

You need to send your text as either an MSWord or RTF text file, plus a cover image.

 

Does the text need to be formatted?

Yes, if you want our quoted rates. The text needs to be formatted as you wish it to be displayed (within the restrictions of some ebook formats), including indents, page-breaks, italics, bold headings, etc.

 

What if my text isn’t formatted?

You can have us format your text then convert it. This will include an additional charge, but since we are formatting and converting we will provide you with a very reasonable price.

 

Does my cover image need to be high-resolution?

Your cover image needs to be 300dpi. The image must be a minimum of 453x680 and dimension ratio of 2:3, or else we may need to crop the image to use it in some formats. We will resize the image where needed (without loss of resolution) for each format.

 

What about images in the HTML version?

You can have your HTML format with or without images. All you have to do is indicate which you prefer. Please note, if you have internal images (like a company logo), you need to tell us if you wish them included in the HTML version. In all cases, images are held in a separate folder assigned to the html file. HTML itself does not hold images, but rather calls them up from a location (the images folder).

 

Can I have the formats done without a cover image?

If you so wish, yes you can.

 

I want bookmarks in the PDF version. Can you do that?

We put bookmarks in all PDF versions. We set standard bookmarks as follows: Cover image; Copyright page; First Chapter; About the Author; Other books by Author/Publisher; Publisher website. In the case of anthologies, we will bookmark all the stories. If you wish different bookmarks, please let us know.

 

Do you embed any metadata?

Yes we do. Appropriate metadata is embedded in all formats where it can be done.

 

How long before I get the converted ebook formats?

While we like to return the files to our customers within 48 hours, you should allow up to seven days for completion and return. It depends on the workload we have at any given time.

 

Why does my book look different in different formats?

Sadly, not all readers display the text as we’d like it to. Stanza reader (multiple formats) for example is really just a basic text reader and strips all the formatting so it can display text from a number of different formats. In addition, if the person reading resizes the text or window size, then what is set to appear on one page may roll over into two. Where possible we convert exactly as you wish it displayed, but you’re at the mercy of a reader’s limitations when it comes to displaying the text.

What happens if I don’t agree with any edits?

As the author, you have the final say on which edits you decide to use. The service we provide is aimed at cleaning up and tightening your manuscript and making it more readable. Ultimately, what you do with the edits is entirely up to you.

 

If I don’t accept some edits, do I still have to pay?

Yes you do. While you have the final say over which edits you decide to use, you have still contracted us to do an editing service, which requires payment.

 

How long will it take?

By its very nature, editing is a very time-consuming job. Some manuscripts require more work than others. We will give an indication of time prior to acceptance of the job, but it can range from three to eight weeks, depending on how many times the manuscript goes between author and editor.

 

Why can’t you take a first draft to edit?

First drafts are precisely that. Draft work is work that is unfinished. We cannot edit work that isn’t completed. It is always adisable for authors to continue work on their manuscript, including self-editing, until it is final in their estimation and represents their “best work”

My manuscript is in PDF form. Can you typeset from that?

Yes we can, although this not classed as a “clean file”

 

What is a “clean file”?

A clean file is one that contains paragraph breaks, page breaks etc. It is easier to work with and so we price that job cheaper.

 

Do I need to include a cover file?

Only if you have to/want to. Printers will normally require the text of a book separate from the cover file, but if you are having your book typeset for ebook conversion you may want the cover included.

 

If I want facing pages to have different margins can you do that?

Yes we can. Often, books have a larger margin on the inside of the page, to aid reading of a paperback.

 

When do I pay for the work?

Payment is in advance, once a quote is agreed if that is necessary.

 

How can I pay?

You can PayPal us direct, using editor (at) ll-publications.com, or you can pay by credit card. If paying by credit card we will direct you to a page where you pay using a buy button. If you pay by e-check, we need to wait until funds are cleared.

 

Can I pay by cheque?

Currently we only accept cheques drawn from UK banks. Work begins once the funds have cleared. If paying by UK cheque, please contact us for a postal address.
